SZL in Lancaster

It seems like ages since we sent Cherry to Lancaster to do a workshop at the super First Age Comics. Here’s her write up and some lovely pictures from the day.

Back in March I headed to Lancaster to run a zine making workshop at First Age Comics. Now based on Moor Lane in Lancaster, Mark and Lucy’s comic shop is spread over two floors and stocks titles for all ages and budgets. As if that’s not exciting enough Francis from Zine and Heard has just begun filling the upstairs at First Age with zines as well and the group are keen to support the DIY scene in the area.

We had such a fun afternoon: in the spirit of International Women’s day some of the girls worked on a zine called ‘put some pants on mister!’ cutting out scantily clad models from fashion mags and creating wild new outfits for them with tippex and stickers.

Holly from the Lovely Eggs dropped by to quiz us on zine making for beginners — i mean she was totally modest, the Lovely Eggs have just released their first zine to accompany their new record This is Our Nowhere and it’s absolutely ace; contributors include Em Ledger, Lowri Evans and Helen Love plus generous use of a Dymo label maker (be still my beating heart!)

We swapped notes on the best places to buy Letraset and the pros and cons of photocopying over digital printing and I was lucky enough to make some sweet trades with comic book artist Lloyd HXC- check out his work here or pop into the library to flick through our copy of his comic book Hobu Nobu.

Keep up to date with First Age Comics here and Zine and Heard or follow the blog.
