A Technicians’ History of the Photobooth

By Jen Grasso - 2025

Photobooths sit in the intersection between utility and art, photography and mechanics, process and product. Despite the threat from digital photography, the analogue photobooth remains. Today they are operated and maintained by a group of grassroots technicians. This is the focus of the Photobooth Technicians Project, a community archive project with members over 11 countries. This zine recentres the history and development of the photobooth on the people who invented, improved, and were otherwise inspired to become the technicians who have dedicated their lives to these machines.
